Why AI Ethics?

Artificial Intelligence is the most powerful technology the human race has created. It distributes (or withholds) resources, opportunities, and more for citizens around the world and at scale.

The leaders of the future will be AI-Natives who think deeply and broadly about AI's impacts on users, workers, society, and the future of their businesses.

How to use this page.

On this page, you’ll find some books, articles, videos, and more that I believe are useful for your career in the real world. While some items may not directly say AI in them, I assure you that everything fits together over the long term when building your career in AI.

I will grade you on how you think, how you apply the reading to your work/insights, how you show a deep understanding of the challenges Mexico/LATAM faces in the era of AI, and what unique insights you bring to your coursework and class discussions. Participation is mandatory, and I have written a simple program that randomly selects students for participation in real time during class. So always be ready to share your valuable wisdom!

You will also have access to Professor McEthical, our class AI Copilot built on OpenAI ChatGPT (4o) and Anthropics Claude 3 (Opus 32k) with specialized RAGs and FineTuners built to assist you during class. You can use this system for all your assignments, projects, questions outside of class, etc. The link to Professor McEthical is towards the bottom of the page.

How do I succeed in this class?

You are the current and future leaders; that is how I will treat you. I expect you to show up ready and prepared as I would for team members in my company or portfolio companies.

At the bottom of this page, you will find the FAQ, which clearly outlines what you need to do to receive the maximum value, education, and points for the class. So read them, apply them, and watch the knowledge and points pour in. What? Almost a perfect score?!

This class is about helping you to think about the complex issues around artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs), generative AI, alignment, automation, augmentation, cybersecurity, societal impacts, etc. It is fundamental that you craft your own frameworks to address these issues in your companies, investments, and future endeavors.

It is essential (and required) that you participate in the class and read the required book to pass the class. Otherwise, you may find yourself losing points at every corner on assignments, participation, and presentations.

Professor McEthical 2025

Use Professor McEthical for your assignments, projects, questions, and group presentations. The system has been pre-trained with information to help you succeed in the course. If you notice an error, share your prompt and output via email so the system can be updated.

I encourage you to be thoughtful in your prompts, which are the key to great responses. The better the prompt, the better the information. The worse the prompt, the less relevant or wrong the information will be.

I hope you find Professor McEthical useful for the class and that it made learning a little easier and, hopefully, fun.

FAQs

Do I need to read the assigned book?

Yes. It will be assumed that you’ve read the assigned book or at least skimmed everything to grasp the main concepts. You can also listen to it on Audible. Just saying/hinting.

Will I be tested on the book?

Yes, the book serves as the foundation for in-class discussions, assignments, and the understanding of AI Ethics. If you don't read it, you will likely not be able to complete your group presentation.

You may also find it very hard to participate in class when asked to discuss the topics at hand, participate in debates, or apply critical thinking to complex AI systems. This may impact your grade.

What articles can I bring, and how much should I write about it?

You can bring any article from a reliable news source, ThinkTank, university, etc.

Your write-up is very straightforward and will be written in the form of an email to a CEO highlighting different AI-related topics. During your first session with me, you will also receive a simple guideline.

I’ve listed the percentage of the grade for each part of the 100 points for the writeups.

  • How does this article relate to the assigned topic of AI Ethics, Bias, Explainability? (15%)

  • How is this issue relevant for Mexican or LATAM-based companies? Why? (15%)

  • Based on your reading, what do you think about the situation described? You must connect the write-up to Ethical Machines explicitly. (15%)

  • Clear logic, well written, with call-to-action and NOT summarizing the article (15%)

  • Writeup is in the form of a crisp email with a compelling Subject Line. Anything over two paragraphs will not be read. If your point is not clear by that point, you will not receive the points you want. (40%)

Can I request more points or an adjustment to my grade on an assignment or project?

Generally no. But if you really feel that you need to ask for it, you will need to write a well-reasoned position paper covering why you believe your grade should be adjusted with supplementary information to support your view.

It needs to be compelling since, after re-reviewing your work, I reserve the right to increase, maintain, or further reduce your points upon closer inspection.

Is there extra credit?

You can request extra credit from your Titled Profesor of the course. I do not offer extra credit. Make sure you follow the instructions to receive all the points available.

How do you grade?

I’ve made succeeding in this portion of the course very straightforward. If you follow the assignment instructions and turn in your work on time, you’ll do great.

You will lose significant points if you do not read the instructions or turn assignments in late.

You have many resources on this page, including Professor McEthical, which makes doing poorly in my section of the class almost impossible if you just use the resources.

I chose to give this class because I think this is a very important topic for everyone to understand. I care more about how you think, reason, and approach these problems, but you need to approach this as you would a corporate board meeting or meeting with your CEO.

Can I make up a class, assignment, or group presentation?

Classes: You don’t need to make up the class. But you must complete all work on time to avoid late penalities. You may lose points if your name is called during class by the system and you did not pre-clear your absence on the form below.

Assignments: Submit your assignments on Canvas by the due date to avoid any late penalties that may be assessed. I do not set late penalties; the primary professor sets them.

Presentations: In the event you need to miss your group presentation for any reason, just record your section of the presentation, and your team can play it. However, you and your team may lose significant points if you do not record your section. You will, however, forfeit in-class points earned during the final session unless you are on a Student Exchange/Study Abroad Program. Worth 10% of final grade.

I’m doing a school exchange and need to miss a class or group presentation. Is that ok?

Absolutely. I want you to take every opportunity to succeed and further your career. Just submit your assignments on Canvas as normal by the due date, and enjoy your time!

In the event you need to miss your group presentation, just record your section of the presentation, and your team can play it. There will be no penalty to your grade. You and your team may lose significant points if you do not record your section.

Asking questions outside of class and are there office hours?

There are no regular office hours. However, you can send a message at the bottom of this page or via the email listed on your syllabus.

Emails are generally responded to within 48 hours during the week. Emails are not checked during the weekend or national holidays.

I have very limited time outside our sessions, so please make sure you have checked your syllabus, modules, FAQ, Canvas announcements, asked classmates, and/or asked Professor McEthical before sending me a message.

Will assignments and class discussions be in English or Spanish?

The class is taught in English but students are free to speak in Spanish. Assignments can be written in Spanish or English.

Can I use ChatGPT or other AI to write/help on assignments?

I’d recommend not when writing your assignments. It should be noted that the quality of the AI-generated writeups have generally received 13% lower scores than students who wrote their own work, resulting in a lower final grade. The systems are getting better, so the choice and risk are up to you.

I’m not going to track you down like Liam Neeson in Taken to find out if you’re using the systems or not. It’s an honor system, and I’ll leave it to you to decide how to conduct yourself. But when the content isn’t good or delivered in the correct format, your grade will suffer.

That being said, this class is about helping you to think about these critical issues around AI. If you rely too heavily on any LLM system to assist you, you will not gain the competitive advantage in the marketplace you desire from attending EGADE.

Lastly, if you use ChatGPT or other LLMs for your work, it will degrade the quality of the secondary training for Professor McEthical and render the exercise less useful.

These ChatGPT/AI Guidelines only apply to the portion of the class taught by Professor Sanchez.
