What if the magic of AI didn’t die… but routine stole it?
What once felt like wizardry now feels like routine
You may not have noticed, but we’re living through a rather unusual time. All of us—including you—are witnessing a unique moment in human history. Of course, the only constant in nature is change: it’s what took us from hunting woolly mammoths to chasing down our phones to order dinner from an app. We’re living in a magical era.
The challenge I see today is the speed of the change we’re experiencing. It’s unprecedented. As a species, we’re evolving at such a rapid pace that almost no one is noticing—unless you stop for a moment and pay close attention to what’s happening.
We’re in an exponential age that forces us to rethink what we believe is impossible to achieve in our lifetimes. And I mean impossible—not possible. Why bring this up? I’ve spent over a decade working in artificial intelligence, and something I’ve heard time and again—from experts and non-experts alike—is that certain things are impossible. What still surprises me is how often those defending the impossible end up being wrong.
Now, I’m not saying you should start believing everything is possible without data, trends, or common sense. What I’m suggesting is that you expand your understanding of what these AI breakthroughs could mean for your personal and professional life. What parts of your job are trivial? What makes you a standout—something not easy to replicate? Have you ever really asked yourself those questions?
I bring this up for a very specific reason, dear reader. Even though we know we’re living through exceptional times, we’re starting to forget it in our daily lives. That’s a risk—but also an opportunity, since you’re reading this. Just two years ago, ChatGPT felt magical, amazing, beyond what most thought possible. Today? It’s... kind of cool. Many of Fast Company Mexico’s readers already use generative AI for all kinds of tasks. What was once Harry Potter’s wand is now just another office tool. Why was it, as kids, we could sense when something was magical—but as adults, we no longer can?
It’s not enough to understand AI—you have to decide what you’ll do with it
To make the most of what’s happening today—and, more importantly, what’s coming—here’s what I suggest:
Don’t lose your sense of wonder about what AI can do. We’re at the very beginning of the next stage in our species’ evolution.
Push the limits of what you think is impossible—if technology could solve it. Doing so will expand how you view risk and opportunity, and help you chart a better path toward the future.
Everything in moderation. The overly optimistic and overly pessimistic scenarios rarely materialize. Use common sense and reflection to shape your own perspective—it’s far more valuable than most people realize.
We’re living in the most fascinating moment in human history. Many of the things our ancestors—and even we—once thought were impossible will likely become real within our lifetimes, at a higher probability than ever before.
The question is: will you take the time to really think about the unique path you want to create… or will you let the magic of this moment slip by?
